Intent

At our school our intent for Science is for our children: 

  • to enjoy science by ensuring that lessons are engaging and fun
  • to ask questions about their world by building on their natural curiosity
  • to develop their scientific knowledge and find answers through theory, first-hand experience and practical investigations
  • to ensure they are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to help take their learning further
  • to have access to the language and vocabulary of science
  • to be courageous and resilient learners

Implementation

Throughout the science scheme, there is complete coverage of all national curriculum programmes of study.  Emphasis is placed upon scientific vocabulary as well as scientific investigation and enquiry, including the correct use and care of scientific apparatus.  

 

The sequencing of projects ensures that children have the substantive knowledge and vocabulary to comprehend subsequent projects fully.   Each project’s place in the year has also been carefully considered.  For example, projects that involve growing plants or observing animals are positioned at a suitable time of year to give children the best possible opportunity to make first-hand observations.  Within all the science projects, disciplinary knowledge is embedded within substantive content.

In Years 1-6 we operate a two-year cycle.

 

Our EYFS children are taught the science elements as indicated in the statutory framework under the Early Years Goal of Understanding the World where they explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants and understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

Impact

The impact and measure of our work is to ensure children not only acquire the appropriate age-related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.

 

Through our Science curriculum all children will have:

  • A wider variety of skills linked to both scientific knowledge and understanding, and scientific enquiry/investigative skills.
  • A richer vocabulary which will enable children to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
  • High aspirations, which will see them through to further study and career opportunities

Our Science curriculum integrates with, and complements other aspects of our wider curriculum.  Underpinned by high quality teaching and learning experiences, our curriculum ensures excellent opportunities for every child to develop and thrive both during their time at Oak Hill, and in their years beyond our small, rural school.   

 

Our vision of preparing every child so they can enjoy 'life in all its fullness' begins when they first arrive at our school and continues until the moment they leave us at the end of Year Six excited, ready and able to embrace all the opportunities before them.
