Personal Development

Why is personal development key to Oak Hill?

Personal development sits at the heart of life at Oak Hill CE Primary. We want every child to feel known, valued, and supported as they grow into confident, compassionate individuals. Through a rich programme of experiences — from character education and wellbeing to leadership opportunities, community involvement, and a broad, ambitious curriculum — pupils learn to understand themselves, build positive relationships, and develop the skills they need to flourish in the world beyond school. Our vision, In love, we learn, grow and flourish, guides everything we do: children learn in an environment rooted in kindness and respect; they grow through challenge, curiosity, and reflection; and they flourish as responsible, resilient, and hopeful young people who are ready to contribute positively to their community. Personal development is not an add‑on at Oak Hill — it is woven through daily school life, shaping pupils’ character, nurturing their aspirations, and helping them become the very best version of themselves.

The Impact of Personal Development at Oak Hill CE Primary

Our Personal Development offer has a powerful and lasting impact on pupils at Oak Hill. Children grow into confident, resilient, and compassionate individuals who understand themselves, value others, and contribute positively to their community. They develop strong character, emotional literacy, and the ability to build healthy relationships rooted in kindness and respect. Through leadership roles, enrichment experiences, worship, and community engagement, pupils learn to take responsibility, make thoughtful choices, and recognise their place in the wider world.

As they move through the school, children show increasing independence, curiosity, and empathy. They become active citizens who care about the environment, understand diversity, and demonstrate respect for different beliefs and cultures. Our pupils leave Oak Hill with the confidence to speak up, the resilience to face challenges, and the compassion to support others. This is the heart of our vision: In love, we learn, grow and flourish. Personal Development ensures that every child not only achieves academically, but flourishes as a whole person — ready for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.

Spiritual Development

Spiritual development is an important part of life at Oak Hill CE Primary. We want every child to have opportunities to reflect, wonder, question, and explore meaning as they grow in understanding of themselves, others, and the world. Rooted in our Christian vision, In love, we learn, grow and flourish, we create a school environment where children feel loved, valued, and encouraged to think deeply about their beliefs, experiences, and the things that matter most to them.

Through daily worship, reflective moments, values‑led teaching, and rich experiences across the curriculum, pupils learn to appreciate beauty, show gratitude, respond with empathy, and develop a sense of hope and purpose. They explore big questions, encounter diverse worldviews, and learn to respect the beliefs and traditions of others. Opportunities for quiet reflection, prayer, storytelling, and creative expression help children make connections between faith, community, and their own lives.

Spiritual development at Oak Hill is not limited to RE or worship — it is woven through relationships, curriculum experiences, outdoor learning, and the way we care for one another. Our aim is for every child to grow spiritually: developing curiosity, compassion, and a sense of belonging, and flourishing as thoughtful, reflective individuals ready to make a positive difference in the world.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

At Oak Hill CE Primary, children’s wellbeing is central to everything we do. We want every pupil to feel safe, listened to, and supported so they can learn, grow, and flourish both academically and personally. Our approach to wellbeing is proactive, nurturing, and rooted in strong relationships. Staff know children well, create a culture of kindness and respect, and ensure pupils always have trusted adults they can talk to.

Through daily routines, values‑led teaching, and our whole‑school commitment to emotional literacy, pupils learn how to recognise and manage their feelings, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies. We teach children how to form positive relationships, resolve conflict, and support one another. Our curriculum includes opportunities for reflection, mindfulness, and regulation, helping pupils understand themselves and develop confidence in their own strengths.

British Values

At Oak Hill CE Primary, British Values are woven through daily school life and play an important role in helping children become respectful, responsible, and active members of society. We teach these values in age‑appropriate, meaningful ways so pupils understand how they shape our community and the wider world. Rooted in our Christian vision In love, we learn, grow and flourish, children learn to treat others with kindness, celebrate difference, and make thoughtful choices that help them grow into compassionate citizens.

Through our curriculum, worship, pupil leadership roles, and everyday interactions, children experience democracy by having a voice in school decisions; they learn about the rule of law through clear expectations and fair consequences; they explore individual liberty by developing confidence and independence; and they practise mutual respect and tolerance by valuing diverse beliefs, cultures, and perspectives. These values are reinforced through PSHE, RE, assemblies, community projects, and opportunities to work together for the common good.
