Our Music Curriculum
At Oak Hill, music is a joyful expression of our vision: In love, we learn, grow
and flourish.
We believe music brings people together, nurtures creativity and allows every
child to express themselves confidently. Through the progressive scheme from
Charanga, we ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and
understanding to become confident performers, composers and appreciative
listeners.
Music Curriculum Implementation
Music is taught through a structured and progressive programme from Charanga, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear development of musical skills and knowledge.
The curriculum is organised into units focusing on listening and appraising, musical activities (such as singing, playing and improvising), composing, and performing. Each unit is built around a core song or piece of music and explores a range of genres, including classical, jazz, pop, rock, world, and film music.
Pupils have weekly music lessons, with singing at the heart of every session. They use both tuned instruments, such as glockenspiels, and untuned percussion. Musical elements are explicitly taught and regularly revisited, with structured opportunities for improvisation, composition, and performance.

They Grow through resilience when practising challenging pieces, increasing confidence in performances, and strong teamwork in ensemble work. They Flourish by performing with joy and confidence, benefiting from improved wellbeing, and contributing to a culture of pride and enthusiasm for music across the school.
