By the end of their writing journey at Oak Hill CE Primary, pupils will have engaged fully with the Write Stuff approach to developing their writing skills. As a result, they are expected to:

• Aspire to the highest standards in their writing, take pleasure in the writing process, and see themselves as enquiring, independent writers who are resourceful, resilient, and adaptable in the face of challenge or constructive feedback.

• Write confidently for a range of purposes and audiences, including narratives, diary entries, persuasive letters, poems, and recounts, among others.

• Draw upon an extensive and precise vocabulary to inform, entertain, or persuade the reader.

• Demonstrate understanding of a range of punctuation marks and their effect on meaning, both in writing and reading.

• Apply a variety of grammatical devices accurately to enhance clarity and style.

• Select and use appropriate sentence types to support different genres and purposes.

• Spell accurately, using phonetic knowledge and an understanding of spelling conventions and rules.

• Communicate orally with clarity, fluency, and coherence, listen attentively with understanding and empathy, and contribute thoughtfully to group discussions.

By integrating SPaG instruction alongside the Write Stuff units, children will develop the skills to analyse, discuss, and evaluate their own writing and that of others with increasing clarity, precision, and confidence. It will also promote a deeper understanding of how language works, enabling children to make conscious choices about vocabulary, sentence structure, and text organisation. This dual approach will support creativity and expression, strengthen editing and proofreading skills, and foster the ability to adapt writing for different audiences and purposes. Ultimately, it will ensure that children become proficient, confident, and independent writers who can communicate effectively across the curriculum and beyond.

Through the teaching of writing, and in keeping with our school vision—Learn, Grow, Flourish—we aim for every child to develop strong roots in the fundamentals of language, including vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and composition. Using The Write Stuff approach alongside discrete SPaG lessons, children learn to express themselves clearly and creatively, building a secure foundation on which to develop their skills. As they grow, pupils gain confidence and fluency in writing for a range of purposes and audiences, from narratives and poetry to reports and persuasive texts, applying their knowledge thoughtfully across the curriculum. By providing varied and purposeful writing experiences, children flourish as articulate, imaginative, and independent writers who can adapt their language, structure, and style to suit different contexts, audiences, and purposes. They are encouraged to evaluate and refine their own work and that of others, developing resilience, curiosity, and a lifelong love of writing.
